A PGA TOUR Charities, Inc. program, Birdies for the Brave is a military outreach initiative, dedicated to supporting the brave men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families through fundraising events at TPC clubs nationwide. The tournament series was created in 2005 by TOUR player Phil Mickelson and his wife, Amy. Since then, Birdies for the Brave has raised millions of dollars for military home front groups, including the Navy SEAL Foundation, that provide critical programs and services to meet the specialized needs of wounded warriors and military families.
“It’s gratifying to be able to help improve the lives of those who have given so much for our country, said Mickelson.
The 2013 series features tournaments in states from coast to coast, with play on scenic PGA TOUR-owned golf courses where the world’s best golfers compete. From Sarasota to San Francisco, and from Memphis to Minneapolis, the series is open to golfers of all skill and ranking. A day at a Birdies for the Brave golf event is memorable and includes not only golf, but an opening ceremony honoring service members.
While improving their swing, golf fans, club members, sponsors and the public also are raising funds to support a variety of military outreach efforts. Proceeds go toward providing college scholarships to children of fallen soldiers, buildings and adapting homes for wounded veterans and other programs to assist military families during times of tragedy.
“Giving back is at the heart of the PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Charities,” said Kristi Cummings, a long-time Navy SEAL Foundation advocate who runs this initiative on the Foundation’s behalf. “Their commitment and dedication to our military personnel is inspiring.”
